According to Tech Times, the Indonesian island of Bali is pushing for a .bali domain extension. Supporters of the planned TLD, such as Bali's Governor, noted that "dot" in Balinese coincidentally means "to want" or "to desire", giving "dot bali" added meaning.
The TLD's added meaning could be useful for building Bali's brand on the international stage, according to Bali's Governor Wayan Koster, speaking at an general meeting of ICANN in Denpasar: (translated from Indonesian)
"Dot Bali" is excellent, because the word 'dot' in Balinese also means 'to want' or 'to desire.' It can be interpreted as "I want Bali." This serves as a very strong brand for Bali on the international stage."
The TLD would join a number of other local geographic TLDs worldwide, such as .tokyo, .nyc, .london, .berlin, .miami and others.
More and more cities and regions are wanting to put themselves on the digital map by obtaining gTLDs.
The domain extension is expected to be officially announced later this year in October at the ICANN 87 conference that will be hosted in Bali.
